The Toronto Raptors waive Pops Mensah Bonsu

Blogged under General, Comings & Goings, Bloglockers, Front Page by alleyoop on Tuesday 5 January 2010 at 12:36 pm

The Raptors have waived 26-year old F/C Pops Mensah Bonsu. Bonsu played in 16 games (0 starts) for the Raptors this season and he averaged 6.7 minutes, 2.1 points, 1.9 rebounds and 0.1 assists per game. Bonsu was really buried on the depth chart so the Raptors just didn’t want to pay him if they weren’t going to be playing him. He should hook on with another team soon.

He played in 4 games (0 starts) for the Rockets this season and he averaged 3.3 minutes, 1.3 points, 1.0 rebound and 0.3 assists per game. Mensah-Bonsu has now played in 38 games (0 starts) in his NBA career and he is averaging 9.7 minutes, 3.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and 0.2 assists per game. This was a good move for the Raptors as Mensah-Bonsu played for them last year and he looked good.

The Raptors have released 25-year old shooting guard Quincy Douby. Douby did not play in any games this season for the Raptors but he played in 7 games (0 starts) for them last season in which he averaged 10.4 minutes, 4.4 points, 1.0 rebound and 1.7 assists per game. He has played in 143 games (0 starts) in his three years in the NBA so far and he has averaged 10.7 minutes, 4.1 points, 1.1 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game. The Raptors won’t miss Douby at all as he wasn’t good enough to earn any minutes so far this year.

The Toronto Raptors have really improved the team this off-season

Blogged under General, Comings & Goings, Bloglockers, Big Raptors News, Front Page by alleyoop on Wednesday 2 September 2009 at 4:47 pm

The Raptors have really brought in a ton of talent this off-season as the front office has been super aggressive. Jarrett Jack was signed to start at shooting guard for the Raptors and he’s a talented player who could easily run the offense if something were to happen to Jose Calderon. Hedo Turkoglu was brought in from the Magic in a huge trade. His shooting should help open up the paint more for Chris Bosh in the middle. The Raptors brought in some muscle in the trade market getting PF Reggie Evans from the Sixers and Amir Johnson from the Bucks. SG/SF Antoine Wright, SG Marco Belinelli and guard Sonny Weems are all running type players who should fit right in with the Raptors off the bench. SG/SF DeMar DeRozan was the first round pick of the Raptors and he’s talented but he will likely find minutes hard to come by as a rookie. The Raptors also re-signed power forward/center Andrea Bargnani and that was also a good move. The Raptors did lose six players in trades this off-season with Jason Kapono, Kris Humphries, Shawn Marion, Nathan Jawai, Roko Ukic and Carlos Delfino moving on. But the Raptors won’t miss any of those players this season as they look like a NBA Title contender.

FRONT OFFICE GRADE SO FAR: A

The Toronto Raptors acquire Amir Johnson and Sonny Weems from Milwaukee

Blogged under General, Comings & Goings, Bloglockers, Big Raptors News, Front Page by alleyoop on Tuesday 18 August 2009 at 5:23 pm

The Raptors have acquired 22-year old power forward Amir Johnson and 23-year old guard Sonny Weems from the Bucks for 26-year old shooting guard Carlos Delfino and 24-year old point guard Roko Ukic. In Johnson the Raptors have a player with a huge upside. Johnson played in 62 games (24 starts) for the Pistons last season and he averaged 14.7 minutes, 3.5 points, 3.7 rebounds, 0.3 assists and 1.0 blocked shot per game. Johnson has now played in 135 games (24 starts) in his 4-year NBA career and he has averaged 13.6 minutes, 3.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, 0.4 assists and 1.1 blocked shots per game. Weems played in 12 games (0 starts) as a rookie for the Nuggets last season and he averaged 4.6 minutes, 1.6 points, 0.3 rebounds and 0.3 assists per game. Carlos Delfino played overseas last season. He only played 1 year for the Raptors (2007-08) and he appeared in all 82 games (0 starts) that season and averaged 23.5 minutes, 9.0 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. Roko Ukic was a rookie last season and he played in 72 games (0 starts) for the Raptors in which he averaged 12.4 minutes, 4.2 points, 1.0 rebound and 2.1 assists per game. Delfino and Ukic should get a lot of playing time in Milwaukee but Amir Johnson has the biggest upside of these four players.
