The Raptors were happy to see DeMar DeRozan fall to them with the 9th pick of the first round of the NBA Draft. The 19-year old DeRozan only played in one season at USC and he averaged 13.9 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. DeRozan is 6′7″, 220 pounds which means the Raptors might look at him more at forward than guard as he probably hasn’t stopped growing as of yet. This was a solid pick for the Raptors.

The Toronto Raptors will be interesting to watch in free agency

The Raptors two biggest free agents (Shawn Marion and Anthony Parker) will likely cost a lot of money to retain. Marion played in 27 games (all starts) for the Raptors after coming over in a trade with the Heat last season and he averaged 35.3 minutes, 14.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.2 steals per game. Marion will likely price himself out of Toronto even though he fits in with the Raptors’ style of play. Shooting guard Anthony Parker is another productive player that is a unrestricted free agent this off-season. Parker played in 80 games (71 starts) for the Raptors and he averaged 33.0 minutes, 10.7 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.3 steals per game. Parker is a good outside shooter hitting 39% of his three point shots last season for the Raptors. It’s possible that Parker could get a big offer which would mean that his days as a Raptor could be over. Jake Voskuhl will likely be allowed to walk away. He played in 38 games (1 start) for the Raptors last season and he averaged 6.3 minutes, 0.9 points, 1.6 rebounds and 0.2 assists per game. The Raptors will likely match any reasonable offers to their three restricted free agents. Backup F/G Joey Graham played in 78 games (10 starts) for the Raptors last season and he averaged 19.8 minutes, 7.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game. He appears to be a late bloomer and the Raptors would like to benefit from it. F/C Pops Mensah-Bonsu finally got a chance to show what he could do in the NBA and the Raptors liked what they saw. Mensah-Bonsu played in 19 games (0 starts) for the Raptors last season and he averaged 13.8 minutes, 5.1 points, 5.4 rebounds and 0.3 assists per game. 26-year old shooting guard Carlos Delfino played in Russia last season but the Raptors would take him back. He played in 82 games (0 starts) during the 2007-2008 season for the Raptors in which he averaged 23.5 minutes, 9.0 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game.

The Toronto Raptors acquire Reggie Evans from the Sixers

The Raptors have acquired 29-year old power forward Reggie Evans from the Sixers in exchange for SG/SF Jason Kapono. Evans is a 6′8″, 245 pound glass eater. He played in 79 games (7 starts) for the Sixers last season and he averaged 14.4 minutes, 3.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 0.3 assists per game. Evans has now played in 514 games (270 starts) in his NBA career and he has averaged 19.6 minutes, 4.3 points, 6.9 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game. Evans brings great effort every night which should rub off on his teammates. But, he’s not much of a offensive player and he’s not a good free throw shooter (52.5%) in his NBA career to date.

Jason Kapono played in 80 games (12 starts) for the Raptors last season and he averaged 22.9 minutes, 8.2 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. In his two seasons with the Raptors, Kapono played in 161 games (19 starts) in which he averaged 8.2 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game. Kapono’s main skill was his long range shooting as he nailed 44.7% of his three point attempts with the Raptors. This is a trade that will help both teams as Evans brings toughness to the Raptors while Kapono brings long range shooting to the Sixers.
