Jorge Garbajosa slowing down lately

Blogged under Need to step up, Front Page by Nothing but Net on Wednesday 24 January 2007 at 2:13 am

Jorge Garbajosa hasn’t played well lately.  In his last 8 games, Garbajosa is averaging 5.6 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.0 steals per game.  He also has shot poorly as he’s only hit 30.6% of his shots from the floor.  If he doesn’t pick up his play soon, his minutes will probably be cut.

I dont’ like reading statments like this as it propagates the myth that player’s performances are graded by their offensive production. Jorge Garbajosa is a player known more for the intangibles, the little things he does and he’s not missed a beat in that regard of late despite the shooting whoas.

Has he struggled? yes. Have his minutes been reduced a bit? yes. He has been injured and ill and it will affect the numbers, but he still sets good screens, plays good man and team defense, communicates on the floor, takes charges, makes hustle plays and creates mismatches on the court.

He is an invaluable piece of the Raptors winning puzzle this year, whether or not his shot is falling and I wish people would see that and not focus on his numbers.

Ok BBM. I agree that Garbajosa is a good player without the ball. But, he has not played well lately and you can’t dispute that. As far as the winning puzzle…..the Raptors are only 20-22 this season. That record has alot to do with missing Chris Bosh for a long time, but it’s still a losing record.

He has not played well OFFENSIVELY lately I will agree with, but he does so much more as I indicated that we need for this team to win and therefore we cannot talk about stunting his minutes too severely.

Yes 20-22(now 21-22) is a losing record but first, this is the Raptors. Being that close to 500 in January is as good as winning Second, given the 9 new faces, many to the nba and therefore excusing the 2-8 start, AND considering playing 12 games without their allstar its’ only a matter of time before it’s officially a winning record. Over the last 15 games or so we’ve won 2 out of 3 consistantly, and only losing to the good teams(NJ, PHO, DAL, UTA). We’re beating the teams we should beat despite nagging injuries and inconsistant play from a few players(Jorge for example).

    What more do you want?

The Raptors have definately have played better than anyone thought they would. The fact that they are 21-22 at this point is amazing. Besides Chris Bosh and T.J. Ford, the Raptors don’t have any other impact players on their roster. I think the coach is doing a good job of matching up with the opponents nightly. And the Raptors could beat out the Nets and win the Atlantic Division with Nenad Krstic and Richard Jefferson both out. But if they make the playoffs, they will be quickly gotten rid of. That being said, I like the new direction that the front office has taken.

Garbajosa is doing o.k. for the season. The Raptors have gotten a nice return on their investment as he wasn’t even a draft pick. I give the Raptors front office credit for bringing in Anthony Parker and Garbajosa from overseas. I also like Bargnani who reminds me a little bit of Nowitzki when he first came into the NBA.
